hardtack is hard
happy new year.
me and chris tried to make hardtack which is a really hard bread/cracker thing that sailors ate on long voyages because it never went bad. it was also eaten during the american civil war. it's so hard that they called hardtack crackers "molar breakers" and dipped them in coffee to make them more edible.
so here is a basic hardtack recipe:
- 2 cups of flour
- ½ to ¾ cup water
- 6 pinches of salt

super lunch
for lunch i had chicken salad with almonds and currants on toasted whole wheat bread, a side salad with newman's own italian dressing, carrots, trader joe's hummus, chips from root vegetables, a sliced apple, and tejava iced tea.
tejava tea is supposedly "the world's only 100% microbrewed and ready-to-drink black tea made entirely from select, handpicked leaves from the remote island of java."
look at it:

trader joe's chicken prosciutto sandwich with a walnut cashew pesto spread
yesterday i had this chicken prosciutto sandwich from trader joe's. i did not know what prosciutto was, nor did i even think about it until i tried to eat it. i thought i had ended up with a salmonella sandwich with a big piece of raw chicken in the middle..but no!
it took me a second and a little bit of googling to figure out that prosciutto is uncooked, cured, italian ham. traditional prosciutto is cured for over 3 years. i have no idea how long the prosciutto in this sandwich was cured for.
3 years or 3 minutes, i still didn't like it and it was kind of blubbery and creepy, so i gave it to chris and he liked it. my prosciutto did not go to waste.
but overall this was a good sandwich YUM :)

polanka polish market! BIG JAR OF SAUERKRAUT
me and chris went to the polanka market on plymouth road in livonia to pick up dinner because i have been craving and dreaming of stuffed cabbage for approx. one month now.
they were about to close so we ran in during the last 15 minutes they were open and grabbed the last container of stuffed cabbage. and a BIG JAR OF SAUERKRAUT.
the polanka market has fresh kielbasa, pork loin loaf, pate, baked bacon all made on the premises. also all bread and pastries are made in-store using old world recipes!
apparently they also have the largest selection of head cheese (which is not much of a cheese at all) in livonia, and a wide variety of herring.
plain herring, creamed herring, pickled herring, herring in wine sauce, herring in paprika, herring, herring, more herring...
i'm kind of creeped by head cheese but maybe someday i'll eat it anyways. there's not much that i won't eat. maybe i'll eat a herring too.
everyone there spoke polish. i do not speak polish, but i was fascinated.
we came home and warmed our stuffed cabbage and our BIG JAR OF SAUERKRAUT. it was super fantastically delicious, and we all lived happily ever after.
here is a picture of our giant sauerkraut jar in the fridge after we ate some --->
i can't figure out how to put captions on pictures that i post.
it's a lot of sauerkraut though.

macarons from vanille patisserie in chicago
what is a macaron? a macaron (not to be confused with a macaroon) is a french pastry made from egg whites, ground almonds, sugar, and icing sugar.
although wish i was in france eating macarons, i am not, so i got these from the vanille patisserie in chicago's online store. they're somewhat expensive, but worth it. they arrived in a box like this:
this guy is really good at making macarons:
